MGD 64 - Round 1 : Day 3 - 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions

Welcome back to the 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions!  Due to a scheduling conflict, tonight's matches were initially planned for last night (Wednesday) but, instead you get them tonight, and then the Round 1 finale will be tomorrow night (Friday).  So, here we go....

To honor Canada, this instrumental version of "O Canada":

AND NOW....to honor America, international recording super-star... Christina Aguilera:

And now, onto the Tournament....

1) Kristen Dutra vs. 16) The Great Morgan Bridges
Portland Women's Region

I cannot think of anything critical to say about Kristen, and I reckon that I would be hard pressed to find someone who could: Kristen is genuinely one of the sweeter people that I know; incredibly kind and caring...so long as you don't be rude to her or cause bad traffic that gets her stuck on the bridge during rush hour.  Her and I go way back to the college days at the U, and always enjoyed her gifted singing, as well as creativity.  While I do not understand her fanfare of the English customs and their monarchy, I don't harass too much because they are things that make her happy and so, why would I go out of my way to disrupt that happiness? Kristen has always been incredibly kind and thoughtful towards me -- as evidenced by her near-perennial appearance in the "Most Benevolent" category of the Ryan Awards -- and, I reckon, if other folks had their own awards, that she would get a fair amount of attention in those, as well.

The Great Morgan Bridges and I also go back to the collegiate days, and, being in the same graduating class, I had more classes with her along the way.  I've always liked Morgan's work-ethic, good-nature, and sense of humor, and it's been unfortunate that the past few times she has been in Portland that I hadn't known about it until it was too late; because I'd hang out with her, for sure.  I haven't heard from the Great Morgan Bridges in awhile, either, but Spaz must be fond of her as that is she made it off the bubble and into the 2014 Tournament of Champions.  However, Kristen has this match-up locked up and advances to the Thrilled 32 next week.

3) Ember White vs. 14) Deanna Wells
World Women's Region

This is an interesting match-up because, on the one hand, you have Ember -- who is sort of like the Wonder Woman of the volleyball court -- and then, on the other, you have Deanna -- who is also a Wonder Woman of sorts, and even uses the imagery to support that comparison.  So, this should be a good one.

I met Ember last year, I believe, playing volleyball and she has a wicked serve that registered, I believe, a solid 8 or so consecutive aces. Off the court, Ember is also a lot of fun to be around and was one of the few folks that decided to spend New Year's Eve with me, Maui, and Eric (after the Knisters left)...which was cool of her.  Otherwise, it would have likely just been me, Maui, and Eric for the night...and I would have went home at 12:15am; not having played beer pong in the Sky Lounge, and been disappointed by the lack of fireworks (I swear, I thought Portland did a fireworks show for New Year's...but maybe they took this year off?).  So, one could say -- quite accurately -- that Ember saved New Year's...THUS, her Wonder Woman/super heroine status! (Tying it all together now).  If the saying is true, that the people that we associate with reflect the sort of person that we are, then Ember must be awesome, because she surrounds herself with and is supported by some really great people.  I haven't known Ember all that long but I'll vouch for her awesomeness.

I used to work with Deanna, and she's one of the many collegiate athletes that went professional in something other than sports, and that could be one aspect of her Wonder Woman status.  The other parts -- and the larger contributing parts, I'd say -- being her work with kids, her commitment to making the world a better place (one life at a time), and her regular posting of inspiration messages, oh, and her strength and perseverance, as a person.  Being Wonder Woman is a lot of work, and a lot of expectations, but I always admired Deanna's ability to maintain positivity and happiness (in my observation).  Tack on the fact that she is into art and drawing (a zombie apocalypse scene being the only of her work that I have seen, but I can dig it), AND she's a big fan of some of my favorite childhood shows -- Darkwing Duck (which I now, forever, associate with her, as I recall a story she told me once about her being particularly fond of Darkwing Duck due to the DW initials), DuckTales, TALE SPIN!! Remember those classics??? Ohhh, to grow up in the late '80s/'90s.  While I don't know Deanna all that well, either (just from work conversations and her regular appearance on my Timeline/News Feed), I am confident that she is the type of woman that is not going to let things hold her down or prevent her from accomplishing what she sets her mind to, or in what she invests her heart; and those character traits are some that I deeply admire and wholly respect.

Unfortunately, Deanna didn't seem to put her mind to winning the 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions, haha, whereas Ember has been quite active in the trash-talking (which I like -- I'm a trash-talker...prolific, in fact, according to some... what can I say? I dig it), and so, despite Denna being an ideal Dark Horse, force-to-be-reckoned-with, in a few of the mock brackets that I made last week (yes, I do mock brackets in advance...), it'll be Ember charging forth into the Thrilled 32!

6) Glenn Herboth vs. 11) John Studzic Dudzic
World Men's Region

One of the quieter match-ups in this opening round is that of Glenn vs. Studzic; the #6 seed vs. the #11 seed.  I've known both of these guys for a few years and they're both upstanding and fun to be around.

I know Glenn through John, primarily, and over the past few years, have partied with him, played volleyball, gone to the coast, to Sauvie's, had dozens of cook-outs and house parties; and he's a guy that can be depended upon to come through for things.  Glenn is a hard-working guy, who believes in doing the job the right way, and is also very connected with those in his life.  All of which are attributes of his that I respect.

Similarly, Studzic I have known for a few years now, as well, and he's always been a good guy to be around and a good friend to have.  He recently became a licensed massage therapist which I know was something that he had been working on for awhile.  Despite being focused and reliable, he's also pretty easy-going, chill, and just a good guy to know.  Whether it's having beers and hanging out, or watching crappy movies about a killer gingerbread man voiced by Gary Busey.  I don't get to see him as much as I once did but we'll get to see more from him next week as he advances to the Thrilled 32!

2) The Great One Ian Mouser vs. 15) Sam Hendrick
World Men's Region

On the surface, this match-up may not look too interesting: the #2 seeded Great One Ian Mouser -- a Ryan Award LEGEND, first-ballot Hall of Famer, world-traveled musician, recording artist, non-profit founder/director (My Voice Music) -- up against the #15 seeded Sam Hendrick, who -- to most -- may just be a name... and a very generic name, at that, but, I assure you, that you would be mistaken.  Well...I guess his name is rather generic, but never mind that.  The Great One and Sam actually share quite a few overlaps:

The Great One, is an accomplished, recorded, world-traveled musician.... Sam had a band in high school -- they were pretty good, from what I recall.  The Great One has had his music featured on MTV in the past.... Sam works for MTV in the present.  The Great One hails from the small-town environment (I think) of Southern Oregon, but has settled in the city of Portland.... Sam, like me, hails from Albuquerque (which is really a giant suburb, in my opinion), but has settled in the mega city of NYC.  Both are well traveled and musically-inclined ...that may be the extent of the similarities. So, I assure you, that this is no lay-up for the Great One.

I reckon that, due to the Great One's (and My Voice Music's) presence in a lot of the things that I do -- past Tournaments, the Ryan Awards, etc. -- that most of you know a bit about the Great One; so, to practice some brevity: he is one of the greater guys that I know because of what he has done with his gift of music.  He, certainly, could have kept up the touring gig, maybe carved a nice life out for himself, and do what musicians do, but, instead, he has been dedicated a lot of himself to helping kids in need. Prior to My Voice Music, he had worked with kids using music as a form of therapy; giving kids with troubles at home, in school, in life, a more constructive and positive avenue to express their feelings, instead of choosing detrimental or harmful options that otherwise would have presented themselves. I'm a firm believer in what My Voice Music stands for and the mission that they embrace, and, in turn, I'm also a firm believer and supporter in the Great One Ian Mouser, because, I believe, that its mission reflects that of his own; not just in words or concept, but in practice.

Now, I don't believe that I have seen Sam since high school graduation -- due to the tradition of lining up in alphabetical order by surname, you can imagine that I was always pretty close in line to Sam, haha -- however, through the magic that is the Facebook, he makes guest appearances on my Timeline/News Feed every so often.  Usually, they are related to pictures he is posting or tagged in from a variety of MTV-related events or festivals.  But, every so often, there are pictures from his series of wall-mounted hand-dryers that you find in public bathrooms.  I haven't investigated the origin of the series -- is it some sort of social commentary? A brand of humor that I'm unaware of? Something that New Yorkers do that I've never heard of? Maybe he just likes taking pictures of wall-mounted hand-dryers? -- but it's nice change of pace from the usual contents on my Timeline/News Feed.........wait...News Feed is the one that I see, right? Timeline is specific to me...so on my News Feed; ignore the slash ................. which, nowadays, is mostly just babies and the occasional wedding... oh, and the Blazers -- either when they win a big game or get humiliated in San Antonio. In short: I fancy the wall-mounted hand-dryer series to most other things on my News Feed, and, for that, I thank him.

There haven't been a lot of shake-ups in this opening round yet, so let's get one here: Sam advances to the Thrilled 32! BOOM! and shaka laka.

Speaking of My Voice Music, this seems like as good a time as any to take a quick commercial break:

https://myvoice.ejoinme.org/?tabid=444962
My Voice Music engages youth in music to promote self-esteem, social skills, and emotional expression.
If you are like me and enjoy giving back to the community and seeing a positive change occur in the lives of kids who may not have a lot of good and positive influences in their life, or maybe not in a good place for them, then My Voice Music is the sort of organization that you want to get involved with.  I am, and I can dig it.  They have a Benefit Concert coming up at the end of the month (May 30th) and there will be all sorts of good bands, perhaps some kid performances, and, of course, the Great One Ian Mouser will be present.  I'll be there, too - if that is a selling point.  Check it out! You won't be disappointed, I assure you.

And now, let's get back to the Tournament....

5) Melissa Newcombe vs. 12) Tara Arnold
Portland Women's Region

I have known both Melissa and Tara in more of an associative manner, since college.  By that, I mean, we had mutual friends and so we knew each other through them but I don't recall really hanging out with either of them in a social capacity.  Regardless, if this Tournament's diverse participants show nothing else, they show that I am friends with folks near and far, and of varying degrees of longevity and familiarity.

I have always admired Melissa's compassion and creativity.  Even though I don't know her all that well, she always has been kind and very friendly and welcoming from my interactions with her. It has only been in the last year or so that I've gotten to see the magic she does in the kitchen, though, through her custom cakes.  More on that later, I assure you.  It is not so much the cakes themselves that are awe-inspiring, though, it is the fact that she does them in her free time, but you would never guess it.  Whether it is someone's wedding day, or birthday, or graduation, or any other special event, she makes it an equally memorable part of the that event.  That attention, effort, and consideration to wanting to make something amazing, beautiful, and delicious in order to further accent a special moment in someone's life is an incredibly thoughtful and admirable trait about her.  I dig it.

Tara is also a very giving person, in nature, and committed to doing great things.  As the former Mrs. Oregon (which I did not know such pageantry existed), she piloted the Movin' It With Mrs. Oregon campaign that focused on increasing childhood activity, promoting exercise and healthier lifestyle habits.... or so I believe.  I sure hope that I'm not screwing that up..... Aside from her initiatives as Mrs. Oregon, she is also a nurse -- and, again, UP nurses are the best of the best -- and a genuinely friendly and kind person.  It was unfortunate to have heard that she wasn't able to get help, from the convenience store guys (or, inconvenience store guys, perhaps) on that one rainy morning.  Not just because she was in noticeable distress and in need of help, but because of how much of herself she has given to supporting her community, I would have hoped that she would have received more of the same.  Regardless, she persevered and gained a learning experience from the ordeal.

And while Melissa isn't continuing forth into the Thrilled 32 round of the 2014 Tournament, it may give her some time to make some more AMAZING cakes.

7) Jessica Hicks vs. 10) Cadence Powers
World Women's Region

Jessica is probably one of my favorite Canadians that I have never actually met; meanwhile Cadence is one of my favorite people that I seldom see or communicate with.  I reckon, that I am the lone common ground between these two women.

This is a quieter match-up due to the aforementioned loose soil upon which my relationships with both exist.  I have known Jessica now for....quite a long while; I forget the year count off hand, BUT it I met her during the Napster days -- yeaaah...good ol' Napster.  AND when it comes to online music exchanges, it's never a bad idea to deal with Canadians: for the most part, they are trustworthy and they have good taste in music, as entertainment is one of their chief exports, after all.  All kidding aside, Jess and I go way back to when I was just a kid in Albuquerque, downloading free music online; and was the catalyst (or one of the catalysts) that took my small campus news magazine (the famed 2A Times) to international status, as she was a primary subscriber.  The Times eventually would go on to be read on over a half-dozen different countries, and on four continents before it expired, and Jess was, most certainly, a supportive person in that growth.  She puts up with a lot of my harassment and over-the-top American favoritism, even though I'm sure that she knows that most of it is to irritate her -- and I'm just really good at irritating, I suppose.  Perhaps her and Aneel will come to Mardi Gras next year, because that would be sweet. Lord knows that I'm not going to Nunavut to visit; I'll go hang out in a meat locker if I want to be cold and bored on a vacation.  (That was the last Canadian joke for this passage, I promise.)

Meanwhile, I've known Cadence for a few years now and while my social interactions with her are few and far between -- usually just overlaps at various My Voice Music benefits/events... or that one stretch of time when I kept randomly seeing her on the opposing MAX train... that was random, for sure -- but what makes her great, and what I like most about her, is her compassion and desire to help those in need.  Whether it be kids in a residential setting, or working with foster kids, or even going abroad to Latin America in order to help villages/towns there.  None of what she does (that I see) is easy work, there are a variety of challenges abound, but she never has seemed to let these challenges get to her.  In that respect, I think she's incredibly strong, sharp, and focused.  It is one thing to endure life challenges and succeed, but it is a whole different thing to be able to endure and succeed while not appearing challenged or burdened; and that has always impressed me about Cadence is that she is able to take command of a situation and keep things cool.  In my limited social interactions, she's also quite pleasant to be around and so I have no complaints.

However, Jessica will likely complain because I'm going to advance Cadence to the Thrilled 32 instead of her.  She may stop talking to me for awhile -- she was already upset that Aneel was a top-seed in the World Men's Region -- but it would not be the first time that has happened, and it probably will not be the last.

8) Eric Benedetti vs. 9) Micah Rolfe
Portland Men's Region

The #8 seed vs. #9 seed match-ups are always a toss up.  Micah clinched his spot in the 2014 Tournament for being one of the first folks to "like" the Tournament's announcement on Facebook. In a world where interest is not often expressed, I made note of the "like" and reckoned that it warranted placement in the Tournament.  Meanwhile, Eric found his way into the Tournament by virtue of I see him quite regularly -- from summer shenanigans, kickball/sloshball, the 49ers' season, Winnerhawks games (aka Portland Winterhawks), and he was one of the few that hung out with me for New Year's; I've seen him somewhat regularly over the past year and so he warranted a spot in the Tournament.

For both of them to make spots should not be overlooked or downplayed.  The Portland bracket is STACKED.  Through the course of seeding the Tournament this year, I came to the realization that, when it comes to guys, probably 90% of my friends are from the U...probably 4% are high school that I haven't seen since high school, another 3% are current or former co-workers, and the rest is just "Other".  So, yeah, an incredibly competitive region yields the best of the best.

The best things that I can say about Micah is that he shows up when he says he's going to (reliable and dependable), he's there for the people in his life, and he always makes things interesting.  I'll never accuse him of being boring, that's for sure.  Similarly, Eric is dependable, and comes through when needed, and is generally a good guy to know.  Always up for drinks and good times, parties, and outings of the like, which is likely why I see him as regularly as I do.  They both keep good company, as well, and that speaks volumes to the type of people that they are themselves.  I'll be advancing Eric in this match-up because we need more red and gold represented in this Tournament -- plus, I dig the trash-talking.  "Likes" may secure a roster spot, but trash-talking is what gets you into the game.  #GoNiners

And now, the Round 1 : Day 3 "Marquee Match-Up", presented by "Melissa's Cake Gallery & Custom Cakes"! Bringing quality, beautiful, and delicious edible masterpieces to special events (or just-because events) for... an unknown amount of years.

Seriously, she is a wizard! I personally had some of the Sponge Bob cake (below) - and I almost regretted having it, in fact.  As an artist myself, I felt bad about ruining such an aesthetically-pleasing work of art.  Especially, since I had been Brew Cycling the whole morning.  But it was worth it.  I almost regretted it.

Work like these is why Melissa's Cake Gallery & Custom Cakes is the Official Cake-Maker of Ryan Henley.  I have not yet needed a custom cake, but, I assure you, if I did, I would look no further than Melissa.  As far as I am concerned -- from what I have seen in life and on the Internet -- she is the best of the best.  Be sure to check her out for all of your custom-cake needs.  I am pretty sure that there is nothing that she cannot do.  I swear she has a wand or fairies or something supernatural going on; pans cleaning themselves, brooms sweeping autonomously. It's probably why she resists my brilliant YouTube channel idea -- it'd expose her wizardry to the world.

4) Dana Troy vs. 13) Justus del Mundo "The Ambassador"
Portland Men's Region

Dana and Justus are two pretty cool guys that I know, albeit, I see Dana far more often -- do to him being here in Portland (for the time being) while Justus continues on his goodwill mission around the globe on behalf of these United States of America.

There's really no better person for the task, though.  I reckon that, if Justus were to continue traveling around the globe indefinitely, he could probably quell all sorts of anti-American sentiments around the world.  He is super chill, decent, friendly, very welcoming, and accepting, but also proud -- what more could you want from an unofficial ambassador??  The first time that I remember meeting Justus was in a Fine Arts class at the U -- he and uh....*thinking*....Kat Forshee were sitting behind me in that class, and I don't remember what initiated the conversation but we started talking in the class; that was the first time that I met Justus and Kat.  It's only a notable story simply because I have very little interest in meeting new people, haha, which is why I would not be a very good ambassador.

Meanwhile, I've known Dana now for almost as long as Justus but -- due to proximity, common social circles, and similar sport allegiances -- I know Dana much better.  Things that make Dana a great guy to know is that you can count on him to come through when he says he's going to do something, he's a passionate guy for the things and people in his life, and he's very welcoming and inviting.  Sure, he has meltdowns over things that I pay little mind to -- i.e. why the Internet stream isn't HD quality; why sports leagues haven't used the streaming ability of the Internet yet, forcing fans to buy cable or go to bars -- but those are hilarious.  I'm a fan.  I'll miss them when he moves to Seattle in a few months.

And although his time in Portland may be coming to an end in a little bit, he has secured at least one more week of action in the 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions, as I advance him to the Thrilled 32!

####

That will do it for Round 1 : Day 3 of the 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions! Tomorrow's matches will conclude the first round and then, over the weekend, you can expect a posting of the Round 2 "Thrilled 32" schedule.

MGD 64 - Round 1 : Day 2 - 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions

Welcome back to this, the 2nd day of the 1st round, of the 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions.  We've got some good matches coming up tonight and, due to the uppity nature of the two Canadians that I know in this Tournament, I found a different tribute video to Canada.

To honor Canada, a sort of goofy-looking guy doing a one-man a capella version of "O Canada":

AND NOW...to honor America, 5x Grammy Award winner, and much more pleasing to the senses than the Canadian guy....the talented, the lovely CARRIE UNDERWOOD:

It was probably the last time that Peyton Manning was smiling on that night, actually .... #HateHateHate

Speaking of which, that is a good segue into the first match-up for the night: a top-seed and a guy who was likely smiling a lot that fateful night, as the Saints toppled Peyton Manning.....

1) Aneel Arya  vs.  16) Wes Wambold
World Men's Region

Aneel is probably the most amped-up, energetically-charged player in the Tournament this year.  After falling short in the Championship last year, he vowed to come back strong in 2014, and, so far, based on his tags, his propaganda, and the fact that he was the only one who filled out a bracket... he means business this year.  His shocking run to the Championship last year was enough to warrant him the top-seed in his Region this year, and he's out to prove something.  Outside of here, I don't know a whole lot about Aneel aside from that he's a dual citizen of these United States and of Canada; has a daughter who he seems quite committed and adoring of; and works in the HR-side of an office environment.  He's a big NOLA fan, as well, and, while it was unfortunate that he couldn't make the trip down the Mississippi River for Mardi Gras this year, perhaps he'll make it out for 2015.  The odds of it being another cold Mardi Gras is highly unlikely, so I'm looking forward to it.  I may even go for a little longer next time.
Meanwhile, Wes I have known since high school, although, I don't think I have seen him since high school graduation.  Despite (like me) leaving the hometown for better pastures on the coast, he is still very vocally supportive and proud of the hometown and home state... and I don't get that.  I have no beef with Albuquerque but, at the same time, there's a reason that I'm not living there anymore.  For me to talk about how awesome it is would fall short in credibility since it, apparently, is not awesome enough for me to decide to live there.  I'm an "actions speak louder than words" type of guy.... as I use my words to convey the point, haha.  Even though I haven't seen or hung out with Wes since high school -- and before he went off the grid -- I always enjoyed reading his posts and accounts (usually about interactions with various people in NYC), because it's an environment that I haven't experienced before. At some point, I'll venture east but I don't know when.  Not too surprisingly, especially since Wes is currently off the grid (he always comes back, though), but Aneel is not getting tripped up in the first round - he came to win and he'll have another battle next week in the Thrilled 32.

2) Tara Walsh  vs  15) Caitlin McAllister
Portland Women's Region

I've known Tara now for, almost, 10yrs, and she is just as much fun now as she was back then. There are a lot of reasons that I think highly of Tara, and, since I'm in a listing-type mood right now, I'll give a few of them: 1) She's incredibly kind and welcoming - as her collection of victories and nominations for the "Hostess with the Mostest" in the Ryan Awards clearly represents; 2) She has a great sense of humor, much like my own, and I've never had a dull time with Tara...especially once Honest Tara makes an appearance in the evening; and, 3) She's incredibly dependable and reliable - she's never let me down and I reckon that is the type of person that would do everything in her power to help out someone she cared about.  She's just that good-natured type of person.
Meanwhile, I always enjoyed classes with Caitlin back at the U, because, as I recall, in the group projects that I did with her, she always brought her positive energy, diligent work, kind smile, and sense of humor -- you can't ask for a much better team member, in that respect.  While I don't think I have seen her since college, I have enjoyed seeing her pop-up on my News Feed or Timeline or whatever it is called nowadays, and she appears to retain that same spirit, smile, and good nature that I recall from the ole college days.  If I ever find myself meandering through Arizona (...maybe on the first Sunday of February......), I will certainly aim to reconnect with her in person.  In the meantime, I'll have to make do with the Facebook transmissions, just as she will have to make do with following the rest of the 2014 Tournament from the side lines, as Tara is advancing to the Thrilled 32.

4) Allison Able  vs.  13) Alisha Finke
Portland Women's Region

Allison and Alisha are both some of my favorite people from the Portland bracket.  Why? Well, for one, both of them are people that I look up to (well...I'm taller than both of them, but you know what I mean) because they have a lot of great attributes in terms of work-ethic, caring, and good humor.  Also, did I mention that they're football fans?!?!?! Granted, Alisha's allegiances are with the Seahawks (meh) and Allison is a Niner's fan (hooray!), but football is a great game and, so, via their fanfare - at the very least, they are equally great people.

All jest aside, I've always enjoyed Alisha -- even though, the first few times that I met her (back at the U), I thought her name was pronounced "Alicia" an she just had a crazy way of spelling it -- because she has a great sense of humor, very friendly, and just one of those people that you feel good knowing.  Much like Carly, it's unfortunate that I don't hang out with Alisha much during the off-season (or at all, really) because I have to limit my interactions with her during the football season.  Although, while I'm not happy that the Seahawks won the Super Bowl, I am happy for her (and a few select others) that they were able to partake in the joy of the accomplishment.

Meanwhile, Allison has been rather inspiring with her apparent dominance in the realm of physical fitness -- I get sore just looking at the pictures of her accomplishments -- as well as her ability to put events together with remarkable ease.  I suppose, one could say, that she has "it" -- since she put up an invite for a series of activities one day (on a rainy day, no less) and near-instantly got people willing to play.... a lot of the same people that ignored my suggested activity day(s) when the weather was actually nice.  So, yeah, she must have something that I don't, but, I don't particularly care -- despite my constantly bringing it up -- because, after all, I just wanted to play.... I wasn't picky on who organized the games.  And, so, I have a great deal of respect and admiration for all that Allison has accomplished and, unfortunately, advancing to the Thrilled 32 isn't in the cards for her tonight, but I reckon that she'll use it for motivation in her other pursuits.

6) Amy Barker  vs.  11) Debbie Gorder
Portland Women's Region

Debbie is awesome.  Not only does she have a history of getting rowdy at NBA games (and hating on the Blazer fans for whining), or somehow interacting with a mechanical whale in New Orleans, but also just really being awesome like surprising Andy with a flight back home for the Super Bowl so that he could celebrate with his Seahawk-loving family; that’s just awesome.  In addition to the awesome and fun times that Debbie regularly seems involved with, she also is an awesome mom and a UP nurse – which speaks for itself (UP nurses are the best of the bunch).  It may have been a good thing that Debbie didn't end up coming to NOLA with us for Mardi Gras... even though I kept her posted on the flight specials from the SLC to NOLA, and pointed out that Andy owed her big for the aforementioned Super Bowl surprise.... I don't know if we can hang with her, but maybe next year we will find out.
As awesome as Debbie is, I cannot recall the last time that I saw her -- it probably was college, though.  In fact, I don't really remember what her or Andy sound like... and I have to really try and think about what Debbie's maiden name is, too.  Wow. It's been awhile.
Anyway, I have seen Amy more recently - specifically, I bought a futon cushion from her that she wasn't bringing with her cross-country to Florida many years back - and have been kept informed on her awesomeness and adventures via the magic of Facebook.  While I don't think I've hung out with Amy much socially (or, at least not that I can recall....that one time at the Eve 6/Good Charlotte show that UP hosted back in college is the only immediate example that I have), she seems to be living it up in Florida these days -- AND in the Tampa area, which, the news tells me, is the normal part of Florida.... all of the bizarre and weird Florida stories tend to come from the eastern shore and Miami-area.  When she's not get her dance on and embarking on a 365 photo project, she's changing lives in the classroom, and it's only fitting that on this, Teacher Appreciation Day, that she gets another treat by advancing into the Thrilled 32!

And now, let's take a quick commercial break......

Okay, coming out of the commercial break, I'm starting to get a little tired of sitting in this chair.  Let's do this....

7) Michael Agosta  vs.  10) Matt Knister
Portland Men's Region

Agosta and I go way back.  I met him my first day of college, when he lived next door, and then we were roommates sophomore year.  To my knowledge, up to that point, he had only had one other roommate ever, thus, likely, making me the best roommate he'd ever had.  Now, he went off to Creighton and perhaps that has changed, but that's how it goes sometimes.  Mike's a great guy -- even though I think he may get annoyed by "Mike", as I think he only introduces himself as Michael... hmm... maybe I wasn't a great roommate, haha -- because he's a reliable and dependable guy, who has your back if you need him.  He's also a rare breed who will give it his all (in pick-up games, for example) but still maintain that light-hearted and fun side.

Similarly, Matt is one of the chillest guys that I know -- even when telling a story that he was (reportedly) mad in, you can't really tell... he does need to tell you that he was mad, otherwise you would have no idea.  That sort of disposition and demeanor is great to have in the group because he keeps a very calm presence -- which balances out some of the theatrics from the more-animated folks in the group.

3) Trent Finlay  vs.  14) Thien Nguyen
World Men's Region

Trent and Thien are, also, an interesting match-up because they both are guys that I don't know all that well -- on a personal level -- but, regardless, have always been impressed by in my interactions.  I've known Trent through my various appearances in My Voice Music, where he has applied his social media expertise to helping MVM with a host of promotional and development initiatives.  Meanwhile, I know Thien through the Griffin family -- Tim "Ace" Griffin and Ty Griffin, who, reportedly, still has blacklisted me for the infamous Jerry Rice Incident of 2011 -- and I had played pick-up football games with him a few years back, prior to his move to the east coast.  Cool guy, chill, and fun to be around.

Both of them had a bit of interest and intrigue in the Tournament, when I started tagging people as they were seeded -- and that's always good; engaged and interested folks are always more interesting to me than the alternatives -- and it's a bummer that not both of them could be advanced (as both would make an excellent "Dark Horse" in the Tournament, as John Herboth describes).  That said, Trent will advance onto the Thrilled 32 because I see him more often, in fact, I'll be seeing him tomorrow night for an MVM meeting, but if I ever make it out to the Boston-area, I'll be sure to attempt a reconnect with Thien.

5) Justin Cumnock  vs.  12) James O'Boyle
World Men's Region

This match-up is an interesting one because Cumnock and James, in some ways, are actually quite similar -- both work hard, have similar senses of humor, and are guys that I don't see all that often.  I interact more with Cumnock at various parties and through the Facebook - as we share more common social circles; whereas, I don't see James as much as I used to, when he lived with Tara, but when I have ran into him it's never a dull time.

Both of these guys are guys that I like and respect because they haven't let me down and, through the other company that they keep, I know that they're good people to know.  While both of these guys could, also, be great "Dark Horse" contenders to mess up brackets.... or "bracket", since Aneel was the only one to play the Bracket Challenge this year..... I'm going to advance Cumnock to the Thrilled 32 because I see him more often.

And now, the Round 1 : Day 2 "Marquee Match-Up", presented by.... well, just me tonight, as I don't have an identified "sponsor" for the Marquee Match-Up tonight (if you have something to plug, let me know!  I'm open to suggestions).......

8) Calley "CalBrow" Ekberg  vs.  9) Odessa Adams
World Women's Region

There is no regular season to go off of, here, but – if there was – I reckon that Calley and Odessa would finish the season with the same record; with Calley, in this case, winning the tie-breaker (the #8 seed) due to her rich Ryan Award history - it is ample.
I've known Calley now for, oh, about 5-6 years now, I reckon, and she is one of my favorite people because she has a great balance of being kind, sweet, friendly, welcoming, caring, and humorous.  Even though, I don't see Calley all that much socially -- I think that I've ran into her at some recent MVM events, but, other than that, just past Ryan Awards Ceremonies and one of the Castle's Farewell Parties (I think the first one... there were two, and I think she attended the first one, which was surprising... I didn't think that she would). Regardless, she is someone that I invite to things when I think she'd be interested in them because she is great to have around, and I cannot think of anything negative to say about her.  She even sort of looks like the adult, real-life version of Sally Brown (Charlie Brown's little sister... conveniently, their first names also rhyme.... dig)....a comparison that, while I think she has acknowledged, she refuses to embrace.

Similarly, Odessa was one of my favorite people around the office while she lived here in Portland (she has since moved back to California).  Not only was she a lot of fun to talk to, and very kind (she even gave me dinosaur stickers, just because), she also is a HUGE Nicolas Cage fan!! One of the few.  There are, probably, only about 100 true Nic Cage fans in existence, and I happened to have worked with 2 of them when Odessa was here in Portland.  Odessa is someone that I could always count on, was always a lot of fun to hang out with, and also introduced me to more of SE Portland that I, otherwise, would not have likely experienced -- I don't go to SE very often; I'm not a big fan.  Unfortunately, for her, though, I'll be advancing Calley to the Thrilled 32 to cap this night.

####

That will conclude Round 1 : Day 2 of the 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions!  Congratulations to the 8 of you that advanced to the Thrilled 32 to be held next week -- take some time off to get your mind right for the upcoming battle; there is still a long way to go in this Tournament.

A quick programming note:  I'm going to push the last two days of this opening round back a day.  I had forgotten about the My Voice Music Development meeting that is tomorrow (Wednesday) night and so, the Wednesday match-up will be on Thursday night, and the formerly-Thursday (highly anticipated Round 1 finale) will now be on Friday night.  My apologies for the change in plans.

MGD 64 - Round 1 : Day 1 - 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions

As we get ready to begin the 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions, I must start off by saying that, quite literally, none of this Tournament is possible without you Good People; so an applause and sincere thanks to everyone.  While being a borderline recluse (or, as Gig Morris describes, like the Great Gatsby), it is true that I do not often expand my social circles, and am not one to associate with just anyone.  I have high standards for the people in my life and that should speak volumes to what you all -- as well as the others that missed the Tournament this year -- represent.

It is always a challenge, and a lot of second-guessing, when it comes to selecting 64 awesome people from a collective sea of awesome people.  However, in addition to being awesome and appreciated (of course), #65 and beyond have one more thing in common with 63 of you in this Tournament:  you're going to enter the month of June falling short of being crowned the 2014 May Mayhem Tournament Champion of Champions.  It's going to happen.

As we embark on this journey, though, there will be some fun twists, some unforeseen upsets, as well as some likely foreseen decisions.  Regardless, know that you all are great people that I respect and care for and, while only one of you will be the 2014 Champion of Champions, you all are winners and champions in your own right.

All of that said, let us move on to the Tournament....

To honor Canada, this YouTube video of some (presumably) Canadians singing "O Canada" with a static image of the Canadian flag:

AND NOW......to honor America, this YouTube video of 5x Grammy Award winner; 3x Female Vocalist of the Year; the 2004 People's Choice for Favorite Female Musical Performer; the 2006 Favorite Country Female Artist; you know her from the opening song of Sunday Night Football on NBC; the pride of Mississippi; the incredibly talented, and always lovely Faith Hill:

The MGD 64 -  Round 1 : Day 1
Starting off this year's Tournament with a strong offering of evenly-matched folks, and capping it with, arguably, one of the most interesting match-ups of the entire Tournament.  Incredible that this one is coming in the first day of the first round, really.

Ladies first....

1) Jennifer Mattson  vs.  16) Kathleen Herboth
Women's World Region

I have known Jennifer now for *thinks intently* I believe about 5-6 years.... *re-thinks intently*...at least 4 years;  4+ years.... and it has been a great experience. Jennifer is special in my life because she an easy representation of parts of my own self that are not as freely explored.  Her adventurous spirit that took her on a few month tour of SE Asia, her creativity and humor, as well as her strength and resiliency are all attributes that I admire and respect, because, despite my inquisitive nature, I don't know if I have the courage and strength to do what she has done.  It's a marvel, to me.  In addition, she is the mastermind behind my signature look -- and, for the few hours after I leave her shop (until I take a shower and ruin it), I am ... without doubt or reservation... the sexiest man alive.  I am 100% serious.  If you don't believe me, that is too bad because I'm also a responsible man and so I go straight home afterwards, so as not to have to leave broken hearts in my wake.

I know Kathleen mostly through her brothers (John & Glenn) and through Friday Night Volleyball at the U of P (since she moved back to Portland), and, of course, Sloshball/kickball games, and so I can say quite confidently that Kathleen is the sort of great person and friend that I have come to expect from the Herboth family.  She has a great will and strength in her commitments, but also is a lot of fun to be around, too.  She also holds the rare distinction of being the only time I've ever seen a Herboth out Herbothed...by another Herboth.  And, while her enthusiasm and competitive spirit is much appreciated, it will not get her over Jennifer into the Thrilled 32.

4) Nate Sheets  vs.  13) Andrew Salzman
Men's World Region

For the past few years, Nate Sheets had been one of my favorite people in the office environment.  He brought just the right amount of comedy, intellect, and sass that made the office hum at a different level.  He also introduced the slang term "asassynate" to describe when one has been sassed by Nate; typically, to the point that they have no response or ability to react.  Thus, they had been asassynated.  Anyway, since he moved on to bigger and better things....in Salem.....the office hasn't been the same.  It is said that your worth is best measured after you are gone, and, if that is true, then Nate Sheets was worth a substantial amount; that entire side of the building has been, by and large, a bore and dull ever since he left.

Truth be told, I have only met Andrew once and that interaction was just a few hours long as he hung out with us on Fat Tuesday in NOLA.  Oh NOLA.  Mardi Gras was a wild time.   Andrew makes it into the Tournament because he proved himself to be just as awesome as anyone else in the Tournament: he is an apparent blogger/expert on fast food (yeah, apparently such a thing exists) -- if you're curious, as I was, he says that...politics aside... Chick-fil-a is the best of the best; he also was kind enough to buy us a round of Hurricane's at Pat O'Brien's, as a thank you gesture for letting him hang out with us (he was solo that night); and he left our party early because he was crashing at a friend's house (who was not out partying) and didn't want to be "that guy" that stumbles into the host's house drunk and loud in the wee hours of the morning -- since we were pulling an all-nighter that night.  That's quite the considerate nature, I'd say.

Furthermore, Andrew seemed a bit more excited about the Tournament than did Nate Sheets and so, that fire and heart to win has just got Andrew into the second round of the 2014 Tournament of Champions.  #NOLA

3) Kristin Johnson  vs.  14) Carly Rodriguez
Women's Portland Region

Both Kristin and Carly have great personalities and sense of humor - which is good for both them and for me, because I have been known to harass both of them from time-to-time for things like the Seahawks and forgetting one's ID when going through airport security, about an hour before one's flight departs.  After all, you kind of need your ID to do things, so it's best to keep that thing handy.

I have known Carly for quite a while, as our time at the U of P did overlap; whereas, I have only gotten to know Kristin in the last year or two.  I have always like Carly for her spirit and strength, as well as her sense of humor and just being fun to be around, and her intelligence and commitment (you don't get through the education that she has without all of that).  It's unfortunate that I don't see Carly as much during the off-season because, Lord knows, I lose interest in seeing her during the football season -- blue and neon green are ugly color pairings... I don't care what anyone says.  Speaking of the Seahawks......

Kristin is similar to Carly in a lot of the same ways, and that's why I enjoy seeing her.  I see Kristin more frequently, due to shared social circles, and also had a fun time with her in NOLA for Mardi Gras this past March.  She's a trooper -- despite a foot injury sustained while training for a race, she continued to battle through the discomfort of the injury and walk a bunch with us through the often-dirty streets of New Orleans.  I tipped my cap to that effort.  One thing that I have always admired and respected about Kristin is that she takes that effort into other areas of life: she works for a small agency in Portland (I believe only like 3 people) that produces some pretty big work around town -- so for her to be able to juggle all of the demands from work and still maintain her social life (and sanity), it's a really great mark of the type of character that she has.  I can dig it.  Even if she loses her ID from time-to-time, that's okay; because she has yet to lose her sense of humor about it.  And, fortunately, she doesn't need her ID in order to advance to the second round of the Tournament, because that is where she is headed.  #NOLA

8) Pat Bradach  vs.  9) Pat Holcomb
Men's World Region

This is one match-up that, I believe, has happened every year in the Tournament; or at least it seems like a very reliable one to have: Bradach vs. Holcomb; Pat vs. Pat. It's unfortunate that I don't see these guys that often because they are both a lot of fun in their own respective ways.  They both have equally fun personalities and are great plotters of antics, although, their styles are a bit different.  I'm getting excited for the summer time, as that is the one season that I see these guys at parties, Friday Night Volleyball, coast trips, and other fun times like that.  It should be good.  Speaking of good, I'm told that I need to watch "24" and it's coming up pretty quick.  I don't know if either Pat is on the grid at this time -- I don't think I see or hear much from either of them and so they may be off doing their own thing right now; which is good for them.  And, it just got a little bit better for Bradach because, whether he knows it or not, he has just advanced to the Thrilled 32.

I'm going to take a break to watch the season premiere of the latest installment of "24".  This show is crazy! I may have watched some of the first season (how ever many years back that was) but, so far, this show is crazy.  Although, while I have Jack Bauer, American hero, on the mind, it is a pleasant and apt segue to the next match-up.... after this brief commercial break....

And now, on with the Tournament....

5) Haley Terndrup  vs.  12) Jenne Wagner
Women's World Region

I don't know if Jenne Wagner considers herself an American hero, however, I think that the title is appropriate.  To my knowledge, she has spent a bulk of the last decade either in the military or through some sort of contractor-role abroad.  Full disclosure: I have no idea what all she did -- maybe it was top-secret and super cool... or maybe it was working from a command center... I have no idea.  What I do know, though, is that she was half-way around the world, away from her friends and family, and that sort of sacrifice and commitment is one that I truly respect and admire.  I would argue that the definition of heroism is doing something -- regardless of the personal toll -- for the betterment of the whole, and, in that definition, I definitely consider Jenne to be a hero. She is also quite fun to be around -- granted, it has been awhile since I last saw her but, now that she is back in the States AND on the best coast (West Coast), social interaction is much more doable.

Speaking of social interaction, I met Haley officially about 2 months ago.... actually, this time two months ago, it was Ash Wednesday and I was readjusting to post-Mardi Gras life.  What made Haley a lot of fun to be around was her spirit and energy. She had been billed, by Kristin, as "essentially, another [Kristin]", which, initially, I was skeptical of -- see the above; Kristin is kind of a big deal -- but, Haley lived up to the hype.  While I have no basis of comparison for Mardi Gras in NOLA -- it was the first time that I had been -- Maui had gone before and had said that the Core Four were the best arrangement of people.  Each one of us brought something to the table and it was a great experience.  As most of my interactions with Haley were at Mardi Gras -- or through Facebook Group conversations in preparation for Mardi Gras -- I don't know much about Haley on a personal level, except that: she must be focused and a hard-worker, as I read that she got into grad school recently (congratulations, by the way); she also is a reliable and effective wing-woman for her friends; and she was kind enough to extend the friendship-branch if I am able to attend one of the 49ers' games this season -- since, I believe, she lives in the Santa Clara/South Bay area, and that is pretty cool of her.  Oh, and did I mention that she came to Mardi Gras with us?  When most of the other "maybes" and even the other "hosts" backed out?  Yeah.  That's pretty cool.  And even though I have known Jenne longer and hung out with her more due to that extended time length, NOLA was an awesome time and so I'm having Haley join up with Kristin in the Thrilled 32.  #NOLA

6) Chris Gammy Gamenthaler  vs.  11) Ken Hallenius
Men's Portland Region

I believe that I've known Gammy, now, for about 10yrs, I reckon.  I've always enjoyed Gammy because he keeps it real and is a chill guy to have around (even though, I don't see him around all that often anymore).  From what the Facebook tells me, he's pretty hard core into climbing now; and, last report that I heard about him (from another person), was Ace Griffin who said that Gammy is near-unrecognizable nowadays... or at least to Ace Griffin.  Apparently, Gammy is rocking a manly beard....for some reason, I picture him looking like the "star" of the Duck Dynasty show -- not the old man but the son; I don't know names -- except, instead of duck callers, Gammy is into climbing.  The bandana is still there, though.

Ken I have known for a bit longer, through my initial affiliations with the Office of Residence Life upon my arrival on campus freshman year.  Ken's a great guy because he has genuine invested interest in the lives of the people that he knows and cares about.  It makes his role in Alumni Relations that much more effective because he can bond and relate to just about everyone -- whether it is intellectual conversations, theological discussions, all sorts of jokes and humor, and even some sports banter -- and that makes him a valuable friend, in my opinion.  I tip my hat to the good fellow for putting in a good word for me in my past attempts to rejoin the campus community, and I do hope to be able to return the favor at some point.

I'm not entirely sure why I wasn't able to tag Gammy anymore -- I was either unfriended or perhaps he went off the grid to focus on his climbing and beard maintenance -- so I don't think he will be too upset when he finds out that Ken just advanced past him in the 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions.... whenever he rejoins civilization.

7) Katrina VanSooy  vs.  10) Megan Craine Parrott
Women's Portland Region

While I have known Megan since we took a Philosophy... or theology? It was a class about death but I don't recall if it was a philosophical-based or theological-based class; it was interesting, though; I enjoyed it.....class at the U, I cannot -- with great confidence -- say that I have ever actually spoken to Megan; and, certainly, do not think that I have ever seen her socially.  Regardless, thanks to the power of the Internet and Facebook, I get to see how awesome of a mom she is, how hard-working and committed she is, her sense of humor, and her resiliency.  I also respect and admire her willingness to listen to people, as well as to offer up her thoughts and opinions.  While I do disagree with the general use of unnecessary "U"s in words (i.e. colour... it's unnecessary, "color" works just as well), that is hardly a divisive or monumental difference in opinion that would distract or divert the overwhelming respect that I have for her.

Likewise, Katrina -- like other nurses, and, especially, UP nurses -- has my respect and admiration for being one of the nicest and most caring people that I know, and that is in addition to being a nurse.  I will never understand the abuse that some patients (and/or their families) put nurses through because I can only imagine the stresses of their job.  Despite that, I have never seen Katrina unhappy or anything less than pleasant; which is great for everyone because she has a great smile -- it would be a shame if it disappeared for any notable stretch of time.   I don't see Katrina all that often, but when Tara & Greg get their summer soirees going in a few weeks/months, I reckon our circles will, once again, overlap.  And, when they do, at least they will overlap with her being, at the least, one of the Thrilled 32 in the 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions -- after her trek last year ended with a first-round loss to the aforementioned Tara Walsh.

And now, the Round 1 : Day 1 "Marquee Match-Up", presented by the Foster Family Care Network, reminding you that you can open your home and change a child's life -- please contact them if you, or someone you know, would be interested in providing foster care to local kids in need.  And, if that's not your thing, there are plenty of other ways to help support local kids in our community.....

http://fosterfamilycarenetwork.com/images/bg_406t.jpg

2) Chris Maui Taketa  vs.  15) Pat Guamie Carayoan
Men's Portland Bracket

Maui and Guamie... it is quite the match-up, indeed.  I've known both of these guys for almost my entire time in Portland; Guamie slightly longer from freshmen year, however, I lived next door to Maui and so the duration of time I've actually spent with them is probably about even.  In fact, actually, Maui may have a slight edge in that department because he didn't go MIA in Houston/Sugar Love (or whatever that town is called) for the past year...it seems.

Maui rolls into this Tournament as the 2013 Ryan Award MVP, already arranging an arsenal of Ryan Award considerations for 2014, and was the chief designer of the 2014 Mardi Gras trip -- in a way, if we were the Fantastic Four, he would have to be Mr. Fantastic.... (that was the guy's name, right?).... regardless, Maui had good claim at the #1 seed in the Portland Men's Region, but I gave the nod of respect to Gorder (the defending Champion of Champions).  Arguably, the best compliment that I can pay to Maui is that he is remarkably reliable and is, quite possibly, the most generous person that I know.  He's a good guy and a good friend and it's too bad that he was out looking to buy those foam pucks for the Huck-a-Puck contest at the Winnerhawks (aka Portland Winterhawks) game this past weekend.  Not only did he miss his chance on the Kiss Cam, BUT we also missed out on that $50 + Lottery ticket prize.

Meanwhile, despite being a guy of equal character and orchestrator of good times, Guamie came quite close to not being in the Tournament this year -- which would have marked the first time ever that the other Kings of the Castle failed to make the Tournament (Ace Griffin missed the cut this year, as did Ty Griffin...who is still mad at me from the Jerry Rice Incident of 2011).  Perhaps Spaz remembered his name from infancy, as Guamie had a solid role in his upbringing when he was just a mere, mouse-sized kitten?  Maybe Spaz remembered that Guamie threw the best parties in town (even though Spaz wasn't allowed to participate)?  Or was it pure chance that Spaz picked that cat treat over the others lined up in front of him?  We'll never know just why Spaz picked him off the bubble and into the Tournament, but he did.

Unfortunately, Spaz isn't picking the Thrilled 32, and I'm uniting the Core Four or the Fantastic Four or the Fab Four (we had a few names) into the next round of the Tournament.  Although, with Guamie back in town, I look forward to the summer ahead and the RFC tournaments to continue.  They were few and far between in his absence.  #NOLA

######

That will do it for Round 1 : Day 1 of the 2014 May Mayhem Tournament of Champions.  Congratulations to the 8 of you that advanced this night and a round of applause to those of you who go to bed (or awake in the morning) with the realization that the Tournament continues without you.  Thanks for reading and there shouldn't be anything on my Tuesday calendar to delay that post.  So, those of you on the East Coast can stop whining about how I'm favoring the West Coast by posting so late at night.  Hey, I don't even get home from work until 8:30pm ET, so cut me some slack, and we'll do it again tomorrow.

~ 2014 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ~

Here are some of the more frequently asked questions that I have been asked or that might come up (mostly copied from last year):

Q.  What is the 'May Mayhem Tournament of Champions'?
A.  The May Mayhem Tournament of Champions (or, simply, The Tournament) is a parody of the NCAA 'March Madness' tournament, comprised of friends that runs its course through the month of May.

Similar to its NCAA inspiration, the Tournament begins with 64 and, through single-elimination match-ups, an eventual champion -- the Champion of Champions -- is crowned.

In the past, it had been the first of three big events in my calendar based upon the Familiarity Ranking System (FRS): The May Mayhem Tournament of Champions (in May); followed by the FRS World Series (October-ish); and then the FRS Championship Bowl Series (January).  Although, in keeping true to the parodies, the May Mayhem Tournament is, by far, the biggest of the three with 64 participants (vs. 8 in the World Series and 10 in the Championship Bowl Series), and the most "famous", as well as the most entertaining (to me).

Q.  How does it work? How do I win?
A. While the live, head-to-head matches would be ideal and much more exciting, that is not currently possible due to it not be that big of a deal to most people, also the distance-factor for some of the players, as well as the limits of time and scheduling. Initially, I would advance the players as I saw fit (creating some upsets - because a Tournament has to have upsets) until Nicole Ison was crowned the 2011 Champion of Champions.

In 2012, however, I switched to more of a game-show-esque format by having the final three rounds of the Tournament (the Enduring 8, Famed 4, and Final Showdown, and thus eventual Champion of Champions) decided by trivia...Nicole also won the 2012 Tournament in the trivia format, as well.

In 2013, though, Andy Gorder won the entire Tournament, within the same game-show-esque, trivia-based format.

In 2014, I will likely advance the first two rounds by my own discretion, if for no other reason, because to attempt to coordinate 64 (or even 32) people into something like this is either a) not possible or b) not worth the hassle.  I'll lean more towards Option B, only because I don't put limits on possibilities.

Q. How do you have time to do all of this?
A. There are several reasons why I do this:

1) I am creative guy -- I'd argue exceptionally creative...it's arguable...
2) I think it is a lot of fun and intriguing; I like having fun and enjoy being stimulated by intrigue...
3) It is a reminder of just how many awesome people I have in life; which are always good, refreshing thoughts to have...
4) It is a real challenge and a lot of work to set it this all up; I thrive on challenges and enjoy the (unnecessary) complexity for something that probably very few (of the already-limited-participants) care about as much as I do...
5) I am a single guy, which can be synonymous with "ample free time" ;) haha

6) Because there are, at least, a handful of people who genuinely enjoy it -- they are usually identified by the "likes" and comments conveying their intrigue/interest. And if I am able to make something that people enjoy, why wouldn't I do that?

Q.  How did The Tournament get started?
A.  For those who do not remember (or are unfamiliar), in December 2010, when I went through the labor of creating the Familiarity Ranking System (FRS) formula and began applying it to friends (like the BCS Ranking in college football), I then generated a large amount of data that, otherwise, was relatively useless -- even to me. So, in order to make use of this substantial amount of data, various games and tournaments were started to utilize the data: The May Mayhem Tournament of Champions was the first of these games.

Q.  What does the winner get?
A.  The 2014 Champion of Champions receives, in addition to pride (of course):

  • Dinner at Stanford's on my dollar (because it is a great establishment and the Official Restaurant of Ryan Henley)
  • Perhaps a nifty Certificate (if desired)... AND....
  • Automatic Ryan Award nomination (in at least one category)

If enough people want to do the Bracket Challenge, then I may also toss in a trip to Stanford's and perhaps a 2014 Ryan Award consideration, as well, to the Bracket Challenge Champion.  However, in 2012 & 2013, I believe only one person (no more than three) participated and so there was no point in crowning a Bracket Challenge champion, and, thus, no prize was awarded.  If you'd like to play the Bracket Challenge, you can get the blank bracket here. More info on the bracket below.

Q.  How do I play the Bracket Challenge?
A.  I put the 2014 bracket online (it's a PDF) where you should be able to download it.  Depending on if you have Adobe Acrobat or Reader and the respective version, you may be able to fill-in your bracket electronically and email it back to me.  If that doesn't work, well, I reckon you are savvy and/or creative enough to find a way to get me your predictions (i.e. taking a picture of each region and sending to me, emailing predictions, etc.).

The 2014 Tournament begins on Monday, May 5 (Cinco de Mayo) so you just have to get your bracket into me by, say, 5pm Pacific Time (8pm Eastern) and we'll call it good.

Q.  I was // was not selected into the Tournament, why??
A.  Originally (in 2011), the FRS rankings dictated the bracket population (i.e. top 64 finishers became the Tournament participants), with the seeding largely being assigned based on one's position in the rankings (i.e. top 4 would be the four #1 seeds, etc.). However, since I have not done the FRS rankings in quite some time, the Tournament's population has no scientific or methodical basis.

The higher seeds are typically friends that I have known a long time or am quite close with, and tapering towards folks that I may not see or talk with that often but who I still really enjoy or have fond memories of time spent.  And, then, there are other folks (usually outside of the UP-dominated population) that are selected for their unfamiliarity to most and thus upset potential or, as Hookah John Herboth called it: The Dark Horse Factor.

This year (2014), I got a little creative with the folks "on the bubble" and, because Selection Sunday fell on Spaz's 6th birthday, I let Spaz pick the final 6 entries into the Tournament (two of the #15 seeds, and all four of the #16 seeds).  I did video record this process but it was rather long and kind of boring to watch -- Spaz made his picks based on which treat he went to (each treat was assigned to someone "on the bubble") and he sometimes took his sweet time making his picks.  Anyway, so that was an interesting wrinkle in 2014's selection.

If you did not get selected into the Tournament, do not take it personally; it is no slight against you. If I did not think that you were an awesome person, I would not be friends with you -- it just so happens that the magic number in this Tournament is 64 and I have some 400-something friends (read: a lot of really great people are going to miss out).  Besides, there is always next year.

Q. Why a bracket-style Tournament?
A.  I really like bracket challenges and the bracket format because, all things being equal (as is the case here), they afford a great opportunity for excitement and intrigue.  Setting up the bracket with match-ups in mind is probably the most exciting part, for me.  Plotting the regions with some thought ahead as to potential match-ups with rivalries or other dramatic elements is, indeed, exciting.

However, while I really like competitions and tournaments, due to certain agreements I made with Jesus, I am limited to what sort of tournaments I am allowed to coordinate, and I am man of my word.  A tournament about how awesome my friends are? Jesus is cool with that topic... and most of my friends are too, I reckon. Everybody wins.

Q.  When do I find out when I "play" in the Tournament?
A.  I haven't figured out the schedule yet for the match-ups.  Because the opening rounds span the course of a few days, I try to spread it out and have some marquee match-ups on each day.  You can expect a schedule to be announced this upcoming weekend, though, just before the start of the Tournament.

Q.  The bracket lists a couple of organizations and then some "official sponsors" that I've never heard of... what's the deal? Do you get sponsorships for this??
A.  The organizations featured on the bracket -- My Voice Music and Foster Family Care Network -- are two local nonprofit organizations, here in Portland, that I personally support and believe in, so I give them both a lot of coverage in the various projects that I do (they've both been the focused beneficiaries of past Ryan Awards contributions, for example).  You should check them out if you're equally interested in helping out kids in the local (Portland) community.

As for sponsors: no, I do not have any sponsors.  The ones depicted on this year's bracket (2014) are all fictional companies that I created for past projects and so I use them periodically.  I find that the bracket looks more legitimate and clean when "sponsors" are attached.  If you would like to sponsor the Tournament or one of the rounds/marquee match-ups, let me know -- I'll hook you up.

If you have other specific questions, comment on this blog and I will address them there -- or otherwise contact me and I can field them.  I am excited and looking forward to getting the 2014 Tournament underway!

-Ryan.
